Biography
Josiah Chan joined the Litigation group at O’Connor MacLeod Hanna LLP following the successful completion of his articles with the firm.
Josiah’s
academic foundation began at the University of Toronto, where he earned an
Honours Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Management in 2018 and served as the
President of the Erindale Hong Kong Students’ Association. He subsequently
pursued his legal education at the City University of Hong Kong, graduating
with a Juris Doctor (with Credit) in 2022. During his time in Hong Kong, he was
an active member of the student body, serving as an elected student
representative. He also became an accredited commercial and civil mediator
through Hunt ADR (UK) in 2020.
During his legal education, Josiah gained diverse exposure through internships at several law firms in Hong Kong, assisting with matters involving personal injury, matrimonial law, conveyancing, and probate litigation. He also distinguished himself on the international stage, competing in the 29th Annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna, where his team advanced to the Top 16 out of 364 teams and received an Honourable Mention for the Eric E. Bergsten Award (Best Team Orals).
After completion of his Juris Doctor Degree, Josiah further pursed a Global Professional Masters of Law degree with the Henry N.R. Jackman Faculty of Law, University of Toronto in 2023-2024. During his Masters studies, he was elected as a Class Representative for cohort of 2023-2024 GPLLM Class and served as an ex officio member of the Graduate Law Students' Association.
Prior to joining OMH, Josiah clerked at the Crown Law Office – Civil, Ministry of the Attorney General, where he was recognized as Best Business Professional (2023) and a nominee of the Excellency Award (Business Professional) of the Civil Law Division of the Ministry of the Attorney General. In that role, he supported complex civil litigation and public law files, including Civil Remedies Act proceedings, judicial reviews, claims against the Crown in Right of Ontario, and Indigenous litigation. He managed extensive disclosure and e-discovery on high-profile matters, prepared motion records exceeding 3,000 pages, and handled more than 200 Rule 30.10 ("Wagg") disclosure requests, coordinating directly with police services across Ontario, including the Ontario Provincial Police, Halton Regional Police Service, Toronto Police Service, and Peel Regional Police etc.
Committed
to giving back to his alma mater, Josiah has been serving as a volunteer Pearson
Scholarship Assessor for the University of Toronto since 2022.
He is
also a polyglot; fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. His linguistic
versatility allows him to bridge communication gaps and provide accessible
legal services to Ontario’s diverse communities.
Josiah is
an active member of several professional organizations, including the Canadian
Bar Association (CBA), the Ontario Bar Association (OBA), the Federation of
Asian Canadian Lawyers (FACL) Ontario, and Chartered Institute of Arbitrators
(UK).
Outside of the office, Josiah enjoys staying active at the gym and spending time with family and friends. He is a fan of e-sports and film, and possesses a keen appreciation for Italian and Spanish classical music.
