After having practiced tax law, estate planning and business law with highly-respected law firms in downtown Toronto for more than 30 years (latterly as a partner), and then with a couple of well-known law firms in the Burlington/Hamilton area for over 6 years (as counsel), Michael became associated with O’Connor MacLeod Hanna LLP as Senior Counsel – and is really enjoying being part of a firm which has a well-deserved reputation for excellence, a collegial culture and exceptional client-focused professionals.
As a senior member of both the Business Law group and the Wills & Estates group, and as the leader of the firm’s Tax Law practice, Michael assists clients to achieve business and personal objectives in connection with a broad range of activities, including:
Michael is frequently asked to advise accountants, investment advisers, financial planners and insurance advisers regarding tax planning strategies and estate planning strategies for their clients. As well, he is a frequent speaker on a broad range of tax planning, estate planning and business succession planning topics to professional organizations, including The Law Society of Upper Canada, the Ontario Bar Association, the Canadian Tax Foundation, the Halton County Law Association, the Hamilton Law Association, and the Estate Planners’ Council of Halton (of which organizations he is a member), as well as numerous business organizations. Michael has also been a part-time professor at Queen’s University Law School and an instructor in the Ontario Bar Admission program.
After graduating from the Business Program at University of Toronto, Michael then graduated from the Faculty of Law at University of Toronto (focusing on Business Law and Tax Law) – and during his career he earned a Masters-in-Law in Taxation from Osgoode Hall Law School. Michael is active in community-based organizations in the Burlington area, currently serving on the board of directors of the Burlington Performing Arts Centre. He has been recognized in Best Lawyers in Canada as a leading tax and estate planning lawyer and has received the designation Trust and Estate Practitioner (TEP) from STEP Canada.
His personal interests include travel (particularly to exotic beach destinations), sports (especially golf, hockey and baseball), music (frequently attending concerts), exercising (particularly swimming) and family activities (which often involve travel, sports and/or music).
