Paul D. Stunt

Practice:

Paul practices entirely in the area of litigation. His speciality is criminal defence work covering the entire range of criminal and quasi-criminal offences from theft, drinking and driving offences, assault, sexual assault, criminal harassment, abductions, etc. In addition, he takes on administrative law cases including professional discipline and Human Rights complaints.

He is an avid golfer with a respectable handicap, a cyclist and a hiker.  His typing speed is about 36 w.p.m.  He is the only one in the firm who knows what a “floating charge debenture” is.  His pet peeves include stupid rules of golf (he usually ignores them), the H.S.T. and untidiness.

Practice Experience:

Paul was called to the bar in Manitoba in 1976 after articling with the Manitoba Attorney-General’s office.  He practiced there until 1980 handling the whole gamut of criminal cases including having carriage of a remote circuit in northern Manitoba.
In 1980, he returned to Ontario, received his call to the bar here and was immediately hired as a Crown counsel.  From 1981 to 1989, he was an Assistant Crown Attorney in Halton Region and from 1989 to 1993 the Crown Attorney for that region and then entered private practice.  He has prosecuted and defended all manner of criminal cases.
In 2004, he was retained by Canada Revenue Agency to prosecute what was then the largest GST fraud in Canada.  In addition to criminal defence, he has expanded his practice to include professional discipline cases.  He is also counsel to the Halton Regional Police Association and has been since 1993.

Paul has for seventeen years acted as a Prosecutor in the Provinces of Manitoba and Ontario and, for the years between 1989 and 1992, was the Crown Attorney for Halton Region. In his capacity as Prosecutor, he has had carriage of every type of criminal offence from shoplifting to first degree murder.

In his defence practice which he has engaged in since 1993, he has defended the complete gamut of criminal offences including the most serious sexual assaults and abductions and white collar crimes and has appeared in all levels of court in the Province of Ontario, including the Court of Appeal.

In addition to his defence practice, he has been retained by both provincial and federal governments to prosecute high-profile tax frauds that have attracted media attention.
